Computers

I am the world's worst when it comes to new technology. I have 2 laptops from work and both of them are not working. I need the new one to teach my second course, so was mega embarassed to have to take it back to the technicians on my way home this evening, so they can sort out why I can't access the university network on the other campuses. My iMac has also been sick - but is coming back tomorrow, complete with a new logic board - can't wait to have my own machine again, rather than squatting on somebody else's.

The day the clocks stopped

Article in G2 today about Hiroshima - a republishment of the original special report of the experiences of six survivors of the first atomic bomb. Chilling stuff, even though its 60 years in August since the bombs were droppped - and people are still suffering from the after effects. The photos show the devastation and destruction, and the injuries in graphic detail - they say a picture says a thousand words - and in this case it is true.

Lichfield Festival

The annual festival in the small city where I live is in full swing. Every day there is a choice of events, and the only problem is choosing what to go to. Last night, I booked tickets to see the film 'Closer', but in the end we rented it on dvd, and had an enjoyable evening chopping fruit and veg, making salmon kebabs and drinking a bottle of wine as well as seeing the film. Today, I managed to drag my son and husband along to watch 'Motorcycle Diaries' - and it was worth the effort - even though the person in front of me had a BIG head and blocked the subtitles. Gael Garcia Bernal was stunning, and the scenery was breathtaking. The political awakening of a man we all think of as a revolutionary - and this was the start of his political enlightenment. Tomorrow the Halle are playing in the cathedral - but its my first day teaching a new post grad course tomorrow - so I think I will give it a miss - but will go with P on Thurs to listen to the Hilliard Ensemble amongst others.
