The 'sleaze' of computer games
According to the Guardian, women are put off entering the computer games industry by its 'sleazy' image. But telling young women to work backwards and in high heels isn't going to encourage them to enter the industry. We run a computer games design course at the university where I work, and they are all typical geeky nerds, with not one single female student among them. Perhaps we need to run 'women only' courses, and in the long term try and wean men away from 'shoot and kill' games to a wider, family orientated games market. But then again, boys and their toys...

Good god. Women only courses! What a stupid idea! How would that encourage anyone to enter the industry? You only enter the games industy if you're passionate about it, if you love it and are prepared to put in the insane hours that the work demands.
The key is devising games that girls are interested in, to make computers not just a 'nerd' subject in grade school, to make it acceptable for girls rather than an affirmation of their coolness by not being able to do anything on a screen.
The Sims and the MMORPG's are what'll get girls in, not making isolating, second class, i-need-to-be-taken-care-of kinds of approaches!
